What is Pilates?

The Pilates Method is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength without building bulk. It is not just exercise, however. It is a series of controlled movements engaging the body and the mind together to promote improved physical and mental conditioning. Pilates movements are usually taught on specially designed equipment but many people have made great gains by performing exercises designed for exercise mats and balance balls as well.

Where did it come from?

The Pilates Method was developed by Joseph Pilates. He was born in Germany in 1880. As a youngster, he suffered from rickets, asthma, and rheumatic fever. He determined that he would conquer the effects of these afflictions and so began a lifetime devoted to physical fitness. He studied the Eastern principles of Yoga and Zen as well as the more Western approach of rigorous exercise and weight training. He moved to England in 1912 and found himself interned during the war at a hospital working as a nurse. It was during this period he developed methods of exercise for bedridden patients that were to become the basis for Pilates as it is taught today.

How does it work?

The Pilates Method stresses the importance of each individual’s awareness of their body as it relates to the individual muscle group being targeted in a specific exercise. It is not about lifting heavy weights or working muscle tissue to failure but rather about stretching and feeling the muscles get healthy by working against minimal resistance. By concentrating on form, breathing, and controlled movement, the body is trained to work as a unit with the mind to achieve a healthy presence.
